The How To of Home Made Edibles
With all of the different edible options on the market, I’m sure you’ve thought to yourself at least once “how can I infuse my favorite foods?”. Well, here at HGP we believe you can infuse anything if you really want to.
While we do have many great pre-infused options to start your canna-cooking journey, there is something that can be so rewarding (and fun) about making your own infusions. Here we’ll talk about how to make cannabutter and an oil infusion.
The first step is decarboxylation or activating the THC in the flower. To do this you first want to grind down your flower, I recommend using 1 ounce of flower for 1 pound of butter or 6 cups of oil, and laying it in an even layer over a cooking sheet. You’ll then put this in the oven at 220 degrees for about 45 minutes. Make sure you open a couple windows, it will be quite fragrant during this process. After the time is up, let your bud rest for about 10 minutes.
We can use a couple different methods for infusing our butter or oil. The double boiler method - better for Olive oil, and the crock pot method - better for coconut oil; both work equally well for butter.
The crock pot method is one that I like for a longer slower infusion process (about 6-8 hours). This method is best for coconut oils and butter. Start by adding 1 cup of water to the crock pot and adding the butter / oil, then gentle stirring in the decrabed flower. Let this cook on low for 4 - 6 hours.
Pro tip: For easy clean up, put the flower and butter/ oil in a mason jar before you place it in the crockpot with water.
After the time is up, let the mixture cool slightly before running through cheese cloth or a coffee filter into a clean container.
Store in the fridge.
The double boiler method is great for a quicker infusion method and oils with lower smoke points.
In a heavy sauce pan or double boiler, slowly heat your butter or oil. Add the flower to the pot in small amounts making sure to fully coat the bud before adding more. Let this simmer on low for about 45 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before running through a cheese cloth or coffee filter.
Store in the fridge.
Now that you have an infused oil, you can use them in place of their non infused counterparts.
I mentioned earlier that we have some pre-made options that are great for infusing dishes. Some of these include:
Rebel Roots Cooking Olive Oil (1000mg per container)
Liquid Loud Tincture Spray -This can be used in your drink or even on a salad! (1000mg per container)
Stoned Syrups by Hapy Kitchen, can be used for a fun mocktail or mixed in with cake frosting
